physical activity as a part of overall wellness for optimal
health. It needed to be a place that felt like home for
someone who’s not trying to be a hard-core athlete.
Te Shannon Women’s Fitness Center met all of my
wife’s criteria. She loves the staf and atmosphere, and
she’s now working out more consistently than she has
for the past several years.
WHAT SETS IT APART
So how does this Shannon facil-
ity difer from other ftness clubs here in San Angelo?
Wilma Stuart, Shannon’s chief nursing ofcer, says the
main purpose of the center is to provide women with a
unique option for beginning and continuing a wellness plan.
“Te Women’s Fitness Center has roots in the concept
that wellness is about more than just physical activity,”
Stuart says. “Wellness is not only physical—it includes many
diferent dimensions. Many of the activities at the Women’s
Fitness Center help support our need for friends, family and
sharing in combination with our need for physical ftness.
“We ofer a variety of programs that meet the needs
of diferent age groups and ftness levels,” Stuart notes.
“Te center’s equipment and programs include a cardio
room equipped with a variety of machines. NuSteps and

SHANNON WOMEN’S FITNESS CENTER
A UNIQUE OPTION FOR WOMEN
By Bill Cullins
Wellness Advocate
MY WIFE, PIA,
isn’t normally
the ftness club type. In fact, I’ve
spent the last several years ofering to
buy her a membership if she would
just tell me which club she likes.
She’s always been active—cycling,
jogging, walking and swimming—
but joining a ftness center was never high on her list.
Fast forward to 2011, and she’s happily matched up with
a workout facility. In fact, she’s started rolling out of bed
early, telling the dogs, “Sorry, no walk this morning,” so
she can hit her new club early.
Te club I’m referring to is the Shannon Women’s Fit-
ness Center. Like many other women, my wife isn’t into
body building, strutting her stuf in Spandex, or watching
guys watch other guys in the weight room mirrors. She
simply wanted a friendly, low-key place to work out that
had a knowledgeable staf, welcoming atmosphere, good
equipment and some fun group exercise classes.
More important, she wanted a place that emphasized
recumbent bicycles are great for those with a history of
hip and/or knee issues. Te treadmills, stair steppers, cross
trainers and ellipticals can be adjusted to accommodate
the exercise needs of most members.”
Te facility currently ofers group exercise classes that
include Body Sculpt, Combo, Easy Yoga, Pilates, Pi-Yo,
Beginning Tai Chi, Tai Chi, Advanced Tai Chi, Terapeutic
Yoga, Toning, Trekking, Young at Heart, Yoga and Zumba.
A PERSONAL TOUCH
With each membership, the
Women’s Fitness Center ofers a complimentary ftness
evaluation, in which members talk with a specialist about
their health history, exercise limitations and ftness goals.
“Te ftness specialists all hold at least a BS in kinesiol-
ogy, biomechanics, or another health and ftness related
feld,” says Stuart. “In addition to their degrees, they are
also certifed as coaches or personal trainers, and many
hold multiple certifcations.”
Te specialists help members select exercises that are
appropriate for their ftness needs and level of condition-
ing. If a member isn’t comfortable with independent exer-
cise, the ftness specialists help her select group exercise
classes that ft her schedule and needs.
You can call the center at
325-947-0590
. It’s
located at 4208 S. College Hills Blvd.
Te center also ofers a fve-day guest pass. Give it a
try, and while you’re there, say hello to my wife. Tell her
it’s time to come home for a while.
