Cancer afects not only those diagnosed, but their loved ones as well. Education and support are essential parts of cancer care for patients, families and friends. Tis is why Shannon Medical Center es-tablished its cancer support groups. Te Survivor Sisters, a support group for all breast cancer survivors and their friends and family, began meeting in 2009. Te group meets at the Shannon Cancer Empowerment & Resource Center on the frst Tursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Cancer Warriors, a cancer support group for men, is open to all men in the community going through cancer treat-ment or supporting a family member or friend with cancer. Te meetings provide an opportunity to share information and ask questions about cancer-related topics. Te group meets monthly.

Tere is no cost to attend the meetings. Both groups are hosted by the Cancer Pre-vention and Research Institute of Texas and the Shannon Cancer Empowerment &

Resource Center. For more informa-tion, call 325-481-2065 . Way to go!

For the second consecutive year, Shan-non Medical Center received the Mission: Lifeline award from the American Heart Association (AHA) and national recogni-tion in U.S.News & World Report. “We are proud to repeatedly receive these awards, which reinforce Shannon’s mission to provide exceptional health care

to the Concho Valley,” says Chris McClish, MD, interventional cardiologist at Shan-non Clinic and medical director of the cath lab. “Te guidelines instituted by the AHA help us make sure we are continuing to provide the highest standard of lifesaving cardiac care.”

The Mission: Lifeline award is the AHA’s national initiative to efficiently treat heart attacks within the 90-minute

recommended door-to-balloon time. Te 90-minute window begins when a patient arrives at the doors of Shannon’s emergency room with chest pain and goes until artery blockage relief begins.

“At Shannon, we use a team approach to this method,” Dr. McClish says. “Our team consistently provides rapid response for heart attack patients, exceeding the national standard of less than 90 minutes.”

Shannon recently installed the Siemens UROSKOP Omnia imaging table—the frst of its kind in the U.S. Shannon urologists use the table to capture images and video of the entire urinary tract during surgi-cal procedures. Te upgrade features the latest technology available and replaces the table Shannon had been using for the past 12 years.

“Te UROSKOP table allows for more accurate diagnostic imaging,” says Bradley D. McIver, MD, Shannon Clinic urolo-gist. “I am able to collect much-improved x-ray imaging and also video imaging dur-ing procedures.”

Te high resolution of the images— 2,800 by 2,800 pixels, compared to 800 by 800 pixels on the old machine—allows surgeons to zoom in without decreasing the quality of the image.

RAPID RESPONSE: Chris McClish, MD, performs a radial cardiac catheterization on a patient to insert a stent into a blocked artery. The radial method uses an artery in the arm as a pathway for the tiny catheter, resulting in less bleeding and easier recovery for the patient.

“Patients also beneft from the imaging system,” says Chuck Dawson, RN, MBA, director of surgery. “Tis imaging system provides physicians with greatly improved visualization of the urinary tract. Prob-lems such as tumors and cysts are identi-fed easier, and the overall operation is safer.”

Additionally, the videos captured dur-ing the procedure can be shared with the patient in the clinical setting. Tis allows patients to see what is going on inside their body and can help them better understand their diagnosis.

Procedures performed using the UROS-KOP table include percutaneous stone extraction, prostate surgery, bladder tu-mor removal, kidney and ureteral stone removal, ureteroscopy, and radiologic imaging of the urinary tract.
