Golf is a popular sport that attracts a variety of enthusiasts ranging from the occasional golfer to the serious golfer who may play several times a week. ✦ If you play seri-ously, you know the connection between your golf swing
and the success of your game. And any physical limitations caused by pain or injury can afect your swing and throw of your whole game. “Injuries to the lower back, shoulders, hips, knees and sometimes ankles are typical with golfers,” says Stacy Beaty, MD, Shannon Clinic orthopedic surgeon. “Injury to any of these areas may limit a golfers’ ability to swing properly.”
Titleist® recognized the need to prevent pain and injury in golfers with the creation of the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), a science-based program to identify and correct such issues. TPI certifcations are ofered through the institute to golf professionals, medical professionals or ft-ness specialists who want to build a golf ftness program for their clients.
SWING SQUAD Dr. Beaty is TPI-certifed, along with Mark Duncan, LAT, at Shannon West Texas Sports Medicine, and PGA professional Jimmy Tidwell of Bentwood Country Club. Tey work together to di-agnose, treat and correct physical problems for golfers.
“We all love the game and want to play to our fullest potential,” says Tidwell. “We all seek that perfect swing and want to hit that perfect shot, but if you’re in physical pain or injured, you are unable to swing the club like you know you can.”
Tidwell analyzes a golfer’s swing and identifes problem areas, and then Duncan performs an assessment. Te entire body is analyzed and measured, checking core strength, balance and other physical ma-neuvers. Duncan also creates a video of the golfer’s swing for further analysis. Te video may also be sent to TPI for analysis by additional Titleist professionals.
“Afer the assessment, a customized ftness programmay be prescribed to correct the problem areas, there[by] fxing the golf swing,” says Dun-can. “If the problem is serious, then it is identifed during the screening
process and the individual is referred to an orthopedic physician.” Tidwell adds: “Golf is a lifetime sport. TPI allows us to create a program that will give local golfers an opportunity to play the game better and longer.” If pain is putting you of your game, and you’re interested in an as-sessment, call Shannon West Texas Sports Medicine at 325-658-5681 for more information.
