Shannon Medical Center | Health Beat | Spring 2020

Spring 2020 3 Pediatrics Meet the 2020 Children’s Miracle Network at Shannon is proud to introduce our 2020 Miracle Kid Ambassadors Hartley Hernandez is 7 years old. In April 2019, Hartley was bitten by a rattlesnake at the soccer fields during her sister’s practice. While Hartley was playing with friends, her ball landed on a coiled rattle- snake, and when she went to get the ball, the rattlesnake struck and bit her left foot. Hartley was rushed to the Shannon emergency room. She spent a week in the pediatric unit in the Shannon Women’s & Children’s Hospital. Hartley may be a little more cautious now when she plays outside, but she still enjoys all the things she loved before the rattlesnake bite. Asher, Bearon and Creede Weitner were born Nov. 1, 2019, at Shannon via scheduled C-section at 35 weeks. At birth, Asher’s heart stopped and he had to be resuscitated. All three boys spent two weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) utilizing equipment pro- vided by Children’s Miracle Network. They have hit all developmental milestones and just celebrated their first birthday! Peighton Strickland came to Shannon as a trauma patient after being involved in a boating accident on Lake Nasworthy in summer 2019. While Peighton was tubing, her legs were caught in the boat’s propeller. Ken- neth Jastrow III, MD, FACS, performed emer- gency surgery to reconstruct her femoral artery before she was transferred to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Peighton has had multiple surgeries on her leg and is cur- rently doing physical therapy three times a week. During a routine sports physical last year, John Thoms’ pedia- trician heard a heart murmur. An EKG revealed that John had experienced a heart attack. He was referred to a pediatric cardiologist in San Antonio, who diagnosed John with a heart defect knows as ALCAPA (anomalous left coro- nary artery from the pulmonary artery). Within two weeks, John had open-heart surgery to move his coronary artery. John is a student at the Central Freshman Campus and likes playing video games.
