8 HEALTH BEAT Sleep Don’t snooze on these facts about sleep Up to 1/3 of your life is spent sleeping. TIME YOUR MOVES RIGHT. Routine exercise generally helps you fall asleep faster. But exercising close to bedtime makes it harder. IT’S PART OF THE HEALTH TRIFECTA. Getting good sleep ranks right up there with diet and exercise as important for your health. MAGNIFICENT 7. Seven hours is the minimum recommended amount of sleep for adults 18 and older. At least six hours is needed to function without being overly drowsy. DROWSY DRIVING NOT ALLOWED. It’s estimated that 1 in 25 adults has fallen asleep while driving in the past 30 days. Researchers estimate that more than 70 million Americans have a sleep disorder. DON’T IGNORE THE SNORE. Almost everyone snores some, but loud and frequent snoring is a possible symptom of sleep apnea, which is a significant health risk. NOT JUST FOR BABIES. Keeping a regular sleep schedule, even on the weekends, is effective for everyone at every age. Also, bedtime rituals are just as good for adults as for children. HIGH IN THE SKY. Altitude affects your sleep. Sleep disturbance generally increases at altitudes of 13,200 feet or more. Why? Probably because of the decrease in oxygen. YOU WON’T LIKE ME WHEN I’M SLEEPY.
