Shannon Imaging Center has been awarded a three-year term of ac- creditation in mammography after a recent review by the American Col- lege of Radiology (ACR). Mammogra- phy is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diag- nosis of breast diseases in women. The gold standard The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of im- age quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR practice parameters and technical standards after a peer-review evalua- tion by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. These experts assess im- age quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, and quality control procedures and programs. They report the findings to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which then provides a comprehensive report that can be used for continual practice improvement. Available only at Shannon Shannon Imaging Center began providing 3-D mammography in 2017. Shannon is the only provider in the region to offer this technology, which provides more precise imaging so radiologists can more accurately di- agnose abnormalities in breast tissue. 3-D mammography is proven to aid in earlier breast cancer diagnoses and also reduce the number of call-back appointments for additional screening.
