Each April, SAISD students from kindergarten through sixth grade gather at San Angelo Stadium to run the final distance of a marathon during the CATCH in Motion Kids’ Marathon Last Lap Celebra- tion. The event, in its ninth year, was born out of a need to encourage movement and a healthy lifestyle at a young age, and it has seen increased participa- tion each year. “It’s definitely a celebration,” says Starr Long, Shan- non Health & Wellness. “Each student is encouraged to walk or run a total of 26 miles before the Last Lap Celebration. The kids get to see their hard work pay off when their family members, classmates, teachers, student athletes and members of the community are cheering for them.” The first 500 students receive a medal and a T-shirt upon completing their celebration lap. Afterward, they can participate in free activities and receive information about summer programs from various community organizations. Local high school and college athletes are on the field to join the activities and pose for photos. “The kids are inspired to involve their family members,” Long says. “We want families as a whole to know how much fun the benefits of a healthy lifestyle can be.” Thank you to Angelo Awards; Armstrong Backus & Co., LLP; Big Country T’s; Jackson Walker, LLP; SAISD; and the YMCA for joining Shannon in spon- soring Kids’ Marathon.
