T he Kids Marathon is something special to witness.This staple event for Shannon and the San Angelo Independent School Dis- trict (SAISD) is celebrating its eighth year. Each April, SAISD students in kindergarten through sixth grade gather at San Angelo Stadium to run the final distance of a marathon during the CATCH in Motion Kids Marathon Last Lap Celebra- tion.The event was born out of a need to encourage movement and a healthy lifestyle at a young age, and it has seen participation increase each year. GOAL: WALK OR RUN 26 MILES “It’s a celebration for sure,” says September Summers, Shannon Health and Wellness. “At the begin- ning of the spring semester, each student is encouraged to walk or run a total of 26 miles before the Last Lap Celebration. It’s a special time because the kids get to see their hard work pay off when their family members, classmates, teach- ers, student athletes and members of the community are there to cheer them on.” The first 500 students receive a medal and a T-shirt upon complet- ing their celebration lap, but the fun does not stop there. Various community organizations have free activities and information about summer programs, and local high school and collegiate athletes are on the field to participate in activities and pose for photos. “The majority of the 26 miles are Join the run Join the 2018 Kids Marathon Last Lap Celebration Thursday, April 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium.
