Ask the Expert: Treatment for kidney stones based on the location and size of the stone with the goal of a single procedure for the patient. Fortu- nately, Shannon offers the latest technology for the removal of kid- ney stones. A ureteroscope, a thin, lighted scope equipped with a cam- era, removes the stones with a laser, essentially turning them to dust to be easily flushed out of the body. This method is completed without an incision and offers a higher suc- cess rate than lithotripsy. Can kidney stones develop again after treatment? A. After their first kidney stone, patients have a 50 percent chance of developing more within the next five years. Urologists have found that patients who have had one stone are usually interested in tak- ing steps to ensure another one does not develop. To help with this, Shannon’s urologists have estab- lished a program to determine the cause of the first stone. Patients receive metabolic evaluation to help find the cause and instructions to help prevent develop- ment of additional stones.
